Rosewood Police engage with Rosewood High Students

THE Rosewood Police have partnered with the Kokoda Youth Foundation and the Rosewood High School to take part in the 2023 On the Right Track program.

The Kokoda Youth Foundation program targets Year 8 and 9 students who are at risk of disengaging from school or family life and lack social skills, have low self-esteem or who are fitness conscious.

Rosewood Officer in Charge, Sgt Travis Ehrich said that through a combination of life skill lessons, physical activity, shared success with new friends and community service over a period of six months, teens gain skills and confidence to overcome adversity through the program.

“Over the six month period, police from Rosewood, staff from Rosewood High and staff from the Kokoda Foundation would be involved in weekly bushwalks and team activities,” he said.

“These activities will take place in the mountains of the South East Queensland area with a goal to complete a gruelling 48 kilometre Kokoda Challenge on the Gold Coast in July.

“The course also includes a two day camp at Camp Kokoda on the Maroon Dam, with activities such as campfire cooking, raft building, canoeing and hiking.

“Participants will also complete a series of sessions of community service to give back to the Rosewood community.”

To conclude the course, the successful participants will then be invited to a five-day trip to far North Queensland to take part in a First Nations guided trip to the Daintree Rainforest and snorkelling on Fitzroy Island.

“The aim of the program is to give selected young people the opportunity to be challenged outside of their comfort zone while building their self-esteem and giving them the trip of a lifetime,” he said.
