“GOD is great” was the message shared by Father Stephen Bliss with students, families and parishioners at a school and church mass held to celebrate 100 years of education at St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School, last week.
Memorabilia and current works lit up the school hall as visitors interacted through displays of class and special event photographs, school uniforms, trophies, school work and other items.
The first mass was hosted by the school on Friday when Principal Duane Wann said that the St Brigid’s 100 year anniversary was marked with a number of key events throughout the year.
“First of all, earlier in the year the students were involved in creating a song and film clip, called Shining Light, the school then presented St Brigid the Musical and on Friday the school combined with the parish to share a Centenary mass,” he said.
“Joining us for the special occasion were the Sisters of Mercy, Father Stephen Bliss, Brisbane Catholic Education Senior Leader Paul Leeson, our neighbouring schools, the Catholic parish, past students and teaching staff.
“These events certainly do not occur without a significant amount of work going into planning, preparation and organising from the school staff, the parish and our families, and everyone involved should be very proud of themselves.”
On Friday, the school choir sang, while Father Stephen led everyone in prayer, the story of St Brigid’s school was outlined and the Sisters of Mercy who founded the school were praised.
Assistant Principal and Religious Educator Louise Steed said that the Sisters of Mercy and the Catholic pioneers who started the school were remembered.
“We also recognise the priests and families and the staff and children who have all worked faithfully and tirelessly to establish our school for the community,” she said.
“We also remembered families, members of the Catholic community and the staff and students of today who continue to keep alive the flame of Catholic education, through constant dedication and commitment through the message of Making Jesus Real.”
Following the first celebration, the school choir and community at Sunday mass were invited to join parishioners to again share the story of their school.
Father Bliss led the service and the story of catholic education was shared before a morning tea and an anniversary cake was cut to acknowledge 100 years of St Brigid’s Catholic Primary School.
