Predicted rain event to bring a wetter than average Season

THE Australian Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) is predicting a wetter than average summer season this year with an expectation of flooding rains.

Seqwater, which manages Wivenhoe and Somerset Dams, has advised that it is prepared for any wet weather that may occur.

“The flood storage compartments are available at our gated dams, including the interconnected Somerset and Wivenhoe, to provide flood mitigation for downstream communities in accordance with the approved flood mitigation manuals,” a spokeswoman said.

“We are required to maintain our dams at the normal supply levels for drinking water storage and ensure the flood compartments are fully available for severe weather events.

“Following recent rain, we are passing water through Somerset into Wivenhoe and releasing small flows from Wivenhoe out into the Brisbane River to maintain 100 percent flood storage compartment availability.

“The Seqwater operations team undertake regular training exercises and have a range of plans and procedures in place, to ensure we are well prepared to respond to extreme weather and emergency events.”

Officer in Charge at the Rosewood Police Station Sgt Travis Ehrich has encouraged residents to stay up to date with road closures during any future flooding events.

“With the predicted wet weather coming our way over the next few months, Rosewood Police would like to remind members of the community to please drive to the conditions,” he said.

“Slow down, in wet and rainy weather and if it is flooded simply forget it.

“Driving through flood waters is extremely dangerous and puts the safety of the driver, passengers and emergency service workers at risk, which could result in not only hefty fines, but serious injury or death.”
