A GOLD in the State Titles by two Rebels Boxers will inspire young athletes to take their training to the next level in the boxing arena, says Rebels coach, Robbie Sbeghen.
Livai Savuro and Joe Bennett have won gold at the State Titles and will be eligible to fight in the Australian Titles in Melbourne, next month.
And their coach couldn’t be prouder.
“This is the first time that the club has had two fighters win in one year,” Robbie Sbeghen said.
“Looking to follow in Livai and Joes footsteps are siblings Curtis, Kai and Ruby Smith who are next generation fighters and are training hard to follow their dreams,” he said.
“When thinking of the next generations coming through the club, locals may relate to names such as Clark and Sbeghen, but now there is a new family to add to that list, and this is the Smith family.”
Robbie added that the Smith family have the makings of what it takes to be great boxers.
“Curtis, Kai and Ruby have found their love for the sport following in the footsteps of family members before their time,” he said.
“The children have great fitness and their mother Jade encourages them to get active in the gym to participate in training sessions.
“There is no secret in sport, training and dedication is the key, and getting to every training and boxing session is very important.”
Jade said her children really enjoy the challenge and being part of a team.
“Boxing keeps them fit, it gives them an avenue to keep out of trouble, and it teaches them how to defend themselves.
“We spar at other clubs and keep quite busy.
“Still each time they compete it gives me a mix of different feelings, because they are still my babies, I think this is a feeling that all mothers get when their children are involved in sport.”
Due to the commitment that Curtis, Kai and Ruby have demonstrated they recently earned a boxing bag. It is a gift from the club when the competitors have been training and sparring at a certain level, the bag also has their name on it.
“They are officially part of my boxing team, this may seem like a small thing to some, but this next step means so much, because everyone involved knows that if you own a bag, you are officially a fighter,” Robbie said.
