Introducing an aerial approach to eradicate local weed

THE West Moreton Landcare Group recently received a visit from Precision Ag Services who gave a demonstration to the group about the benefits of drones to eradicate weeds on a property at Tallegalla

Landcare Group President Kevin Lewis said that it has been some months since the group has been able to get together.

“It is said that Australia is a land of droughts and flooding rains and I suppose now we can add bushfires and a viral pandemic,” he said.

“The work within our group involves removing invasive weeds, planting and maintaining habitat and educating members, the community and landholders about environmental and sustainability issues.

“The management committee had these activities planned, but had to cancel due to the above issues and as a result of recent high rainfall, an explosion of weeds of many types has occurred.

“Some of these weed varieties have not been seen for some years.

“In light of this weed problem, I followed up on the use of drones to apply herbicides.”

Larry Rauschenbach and Dan Sheahan from Precision Ag Services joined the Landcare group to provide the members with an informative demonstration day about how drones can be used to eradicate outbreaks of weed.

“They conducted a practical demonstration for our group based around how drones work in applying herbicides to weeds,” Kevin said.

“It was an exciting opportunity to see modern technology at work and it was a real eye opener.

“It was great to see the vast area that the drone covered and how the use of the drone can be beneficial in so many ways such as saving the time and energy that is used when manual spraying weeds.”
