THE casual planting of Jap Pumpkin seeds brought with it a bumper surprise.
When Bill Yarrow and his partner Valerie planted the seeds on the Yarrow family farm at Lanefield five months ago, their expectations were no higher than a normal yield.
The harvest however was far from normal.
“At harvest time I went out to cut my pumpkins from the vine,” says Bill Yarrow, “and to my surprise I came across many good sized pumpkins and one that really stood out as one of the biggest that I have ever grown.
“I picked it up, took it up home and put it on the scales to weigh it, and wow, I thought, as the scales settled at 10 kilograms.”
And Valerie didn’t waste time in making use of the fresh harvest as she made pumpkin scones over the weekend.
“I was quite proud of what I achieved with my pumpkins this year, you never know I may just enter them into the local show next time,” Bill said.
