Cricketers reunite in Marburg

MEMORIES of the good old days at the Marburg Cricket Club were shared recently with founding members.

The club was established in 1946.

Life members Merv Steinhardt, John Verrenkamp, Allan Doyle, Kevin Rohl, Kerry McNamara, Danny Bowden and Barry Steinhardt led the conversation talking about their time as young lads on the pitch.

Helen Doyle said the team’s home ground was the Marburg Showgrounds where the senior and junior teams in the Ipswich and West Moreton Cricket Association competition also played.

“The Marburg team played against many other clubs throughout the years including Ipswich Norths, Waysiders, Brothers, Centrals and Laidley,” she said.

“The founding members described their time playing cricket as a bond of comradery between their team mates, where they gave it their best shot each time they played.”

In 2005, the Marburg Club joined with the Mt Crosby Cricket Club and are now called the Marburg Mt Crosby Thunder and are based at the Tivoli and Fernvale sportsfields.

“Most of the senior players from the Grand final series in the 2001/2002 season were in attendance on the night,” Helen said.

“In this season the first and second division teams made the finals, with the first division team taking home the win.

“This was a special get together where the players reminisced and shared stories, over a few drinks and good food until the early hours of the morning.”
