Seniors celebrated at annual luncheon

THROUGHOUT October, community groups and organisations across Queensland hosted events and activities in celebration of Senior’s Month.

Locally, seniors were celebrated at the Rosewood Senior’s Luncheon at the Cultural Centre on Friday, October 18.

The hall was abuzz with around 100 seniors and 20 volunteers, as well as stallholders.

The community choir serenaded the crowd with old time favourites and provided much enjoyed entertainment, while guests were enjoying dessert.

“This free annual community event connects seniors with each other, community, services and to the Rosewood and District Support Centre.

“The not-for-profit community organisation organised the event and are an ongoing support for local seniors through the Rosewood Community Centre, Community pop-up hubs and groups and events that support the Rosewood and surrounding areas seniors,” said Donna Hanlon, the Centre’s General Manager.

“We have run this seniors event every year since, 2003 except for the covid shutdown. Our local seniors really enjoy it and it’s an important event to connect with seniors.

“This event is about connection and linking seniors to community and services.

“We are always working toward ways of reducing isolation and increasing support for seniors.

“Although the day is mostly about having fun, we do make sure the expo and presentations on the day are specifically targeted to the needs of our seniors.”

This year’s presentation at the luncheon was delivered by ADA which is a free service providing advocates for seniors. They are available at the community centre and pop-up hubs almost every Wednesday morning.”

The Centre’s Community Project Worker, Tia Lancaster organised the luncheon.

“Each attendee was treated to a delicious two course lunch lovingly prepared by Donna Hanlon and local volunteers.

“The Volunteers and Donna made feeding more than 120 people effortless. They seamlessly delivered a two-course meal and all the preparation work leading up to and after the event. I am so grateful for the support that they offer. Without their efforts and dedication events like the Rosewood Seniors Luncheon would not happen.”

The money raised from the raffle on the day will go to the Rosewood Seniors Group to help reduce the cost of bus trips next year.
