RAAF recognises Rosewood through naming of plane

A ROYAL Australian Air Force KC-30A Multi Role Tanker Transport Aircraft has been named Rosewood to recognise the town near the Amberley Base.

Amberley Base representatives, Group Captain Brent Taylor and Warrant Officer Rick Kiely visited Rosewood to officially present Rosewood Lions President Bernie Newell and fellow Lion David Pahlke with a framed photograph of the KC-30A Aircraft.

The project was initiated about two years ago by David after he heard that there was an aircraft that bore the name Amberley.

He approached the Club and Member for Blair Shayne Neumann about naming an aircraft Rosewood, and approach was made to the Base

WO Rick Kiely said the KC-30A multi role tanker transport was the refuelling aircraft for the RAAF, and it was a military variant of the Airbus A330 civilian airliner that was modified for air refuelling operations.

“The KC-30A is capable of off-loading fuel while airborne to a myriad of Australian and international military aircraft while also having the capability to be refuelled by another KC-30A or other certified boom capable refuelling platform,” he said.

“Off-loading fuel can be achieved by two different systems.

“The Hose and Drogue system located under both wings are utilised to refuel fighter aircraft such as the F/A-18F/G Super Hornet aircraft or the Advanced Refuelling Boom System located at the centre rear of the lower fuselage which can refuel aircraft such as the F-35A Joint Strike Fighter, P8 Poseidon, and C-17A Globemaster.”

MP Shayne Neumann said the Rosewood Lions had worked to bring the project to fruition.

“It is great to see Rosewood being recognised on one of the planes used by the RAAF base for military defence and other projects.

“Amberley has had a long-standing connection with the Rosewood community and it has been a mighty job of assisting and helping the Rosewood Lions with getting this project done. I congratulate them on a job well done.”
